Wyclef Jean - If I were President |

What does the ‘freest country’ in the world – the Netherlands and Alaska have in common, other than the unlimited freedom both offer? Try reading today’s newspapers, if the news from this last frontier had trickled down to your big city newspaper office and managed to grab a li'l bit of elbow room from the Bush-Kerry spectacle, you’d know the answer – MARIJUANA. Today, the 650,000 voters in Alaska will decide whether to make Alaska the first state in the US of A to legalize the sale, possession and use of marijuana by adults. Alaska already allows legal possession of small amount (4 ounce) of marijuana by adults, the most liberal policy among the 50 U.S. states, as a result of a 1975 state Supreme Court ruling.(are u reading me </a></b></a> lord_victor, </a></b></a> poocha9 ?)
Whooo…hoo…..Marijuana…no way, isn’t that a harmful drug? Well, for a change (or as expected) I am going to defend Marijuana. Smoking is harmful to your health(so is alcohol, colas and coffee) and mine,if I sit next to you. But if you are going to pursue this interesting, life-threatening hobby of yours, the deal gets better when you have a choice, right? This comes from a person who has not smoked a cigeratte in her entire life and doesn’t drink coffee. What is the whole ruckus about Marijuana, I remember reading looong back it was/is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol, so I decided to dig deeper.
In 1977 American Medical Association(AMA) came out in favor of decriminalizing the use of pot. Both tobacco and marijuana contain same amount of carcinogens and no one has ever died of a marijuana overdose. Marijuana is not a gateway drug, meaning the use of pot won’t lead you to the nether world of more potent drugs like cocaine or heroine, infact after the legalization of marijuana in the Netherlands, their usage of hardcore drugs came down substantially. So unless you are deeply worried about the economy of Columbia, there is nothing more harmful in marijuana that is not already there in tobacco(or coffee or alcohol). Its just a matter of choice. You can either take it or leave it, its up to you. And maybe a day will come WJ Clinton will be rememebered more for his marijuana confession than for his monica one. More truth about Pot here
It’s the thought that counts, the ability to think with out biases, to give consideration even to the wildest idea. The only remaining wild west in America, where freedom – personal and physical, holds the utmost priority, is once again ruffling its wild feathers. Whether Marijuana wins or loses, the 'openness' of Alaska never ceases to fascinate me. Go Alaska Go!
