Slush Cup [05 May 2005|01:45pm]
[ mood | blah ]
[ music | Alicia Keys - Karma ]

Long dark winters make many a person lose more than one screw. Alaskans coming out of winter hibernation of 20-24 hour nights are the best examples to study how human bodies deprived of sunshine and warmth will react to the sudden increment of both these factors, come Spring. As demonstrated in the pictures below, they express their happiness and gratitude by jumping in to icy water in fancy costumes.

Slush Cup takes place every year in early April, at Alyeska Ski Resort, 45 minutes drive south of Anchorage. Skiers and snowboarders, dressed up in zany costumes, ski downhill towards a 50-60 feet long manmade pool. The aim is to skim(on skis or snowboards) across the water surface and reach the other side without losing control and going down. Only a handful of people make it to the other side. I saw five who made it across the icy pool from a crowd of about 35 contestants, like the one in the picture below (this is all the 'zoom' I can muster).

As a 'warm-up' event before the Slush Cup there were swimming competitions for men and women.
