Shine on you crazy cubic zirconium [31 Aug 2006|09:51pm]
[ music | Justin Timberlake - Sexy Back. lol ]

"Show her that you'll love her for another thousand years." This is one of the many ad slogans churned out every year by the diamond monopoly De Beers. Viagra will only get you cheap sex, De Beers teaches you how to buy a lifetime of love if you could spare them a change of 3-4 grand.

Now you cannot put all the blame on the fragile shoulders of the poor De Beers. If you ask me, everyone from Pink Floyd to nursery rhymes is guilty of promoting diamonds. If only PF had written "Shine on you crazy cubic zirconium" or better still had they started it young when our minds were reasonably malleable and sang us "..up above the world so high, like a sapphire in the sky," or something less expensive.

Thanks to the relentless marketing and ultra successful corporate mind control De Beers has been able to fool half the world with a chunk of carbon proclaiming , "a diamond is forever". Indeed it is forever once you buy it as it has a very low resale value because of its crazy mark-ups. By keeping it forever rather than reselling it you have also eliminated all the market competition for DeBeers.

The 'surprise' diamond engagement ring was also a DeBeers invention. They funded the positioning of the said surprises in movies and thus making it the singular event that'll trigger start the American marital process. Who cares if diamonds sponsored the horrible tragedy of 9/11 or the millions of lives lost in West and South Africa, or if diamonds were instrumental in funding the long running insurgencies and civil wars through out the developing world. If you could wear a diamond pendent or be 'surprised' by your fiancé by a honking stone, who gives a sh*t about Africa?!??

I understand a woman's need to wear beautiful jewelry. That's why like a good daughter I bought my Mom a load of Cubic Zirconia jewelry to distribute amongst cousins and aunts when she returned from America. Cubic Zirconia is aptly known in India as American diamond. The picture below is one of the cubic zirconia studs I bought. Yeah I am cheap.

Dubbed the poor man's diamond, Cubic Zirconia, is a stone similar to diamond and much more versatile They have the same chemical properties of diamonds. It is unable to be differentiated by an untrained eye, the only way to tell the difference is by thermal conductivity method which requires faculties and instruments more complex than our five senses. Cubic Zirconium can be just as beautiful and is 100 times less costly and the 4Cs – cut, clarity, color and carat apply to CS as well, but who will listen?

If don't really want to hear my self-righteous yap-yap against diamonds but still would like to know what the hullabaloo is all about, go watch this movie. The movie called The Blood Diamond starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Connelly is coming out soon. It'll be a ready-to-serve, entertaining and easily digestible package depicting the whole messed up saga of diamonds, catch it if you can.
