I see more women cooking these days. No, I have never harbored fantasies about men donning the apron for practical purposes; have always considered women better cooks. Men will barbecue or with chef-like extravagance conjure up a fabulous weekend meal emptying more than a week's supply groceries and leave the woman to clean up the mess in the kitchen afterwards.
It heartens me that "women cooking" is no longer a conspiracy theory – looks like it has been established with finality that women are the ones who prepare food for the majority of mankind while men mostly cook on TV shows, restaurants and other kitchens of high 'visibility'. The visibility part is important because seeing is believing, the right exposure makes the best picture or in this case best cooks are the ones with best photographs?!?
I am talking about food blogs. If there was one trend worth spotting (and of personal interest to me) in the blogosphere in 2005-06, that was the advent of food blogs or more specifically the rise of Indian food blogs. Most of the high profile high traffic Indian food bloggers were unknown housewives or working moms practicing their art of feeding their families in the near anonymity of their suburban kitchens. Not anymore, there is a virtual army of food bloggers of Indian descent out there taking on international and native cuisines with equal ease everyday and publishing it online for the whole world to see and smack their lips.
Many of these blogs represent a perfect marriage of writing talent, cooking skills and edible art portrayed in the form of mind blowing digital pictures. The food presentation skills of the women behind these journals give you a glimpse of the wealth of their talent. I have been following their cookery adventures for quite some time now, thanks to my feed reader.
Below is a screenshot of their posts from my reader. To give due credit to their delicious creations, you should visit their blogs.

Some of my favorites are (he he there is some real partiality here, almost all listed below are Malayali bloggers, except for a couple),
Spicyana Saffron Hut Malabar Spices Kerala Kitchen Bhakshanam Salt and Pepper Mahanandi
These ladies have a well-knit community thing going with monthly, quarterly cookery competitions and recipe exchanges. Some of the blogs are indeed very well-designed, organized and professional-looking. Indi Bloggies – the Indian Weblog Awards have recognized the debut of Indian food diarists by adding a whole new category to their Blogging Awards which was non-existent before 2006 – The Best Indi Food Blog. The ladies have definitely arrived in the blogosphere. If I could’ve given a Malayalam title for this post I’d have borrowed the name of V.T.Bhattathiripad’s famous play, "Adukkalayil ninnu Araganthekk"(rough translation: From the Kitchen to the Arena/Stage).
(p.s- Following the online spice route, hanging on to the pallus of these domestic divas have had its repurcussions on my lifestyle. Nowadays I approach a plate of food with the camera first, fork and spoon have been relegated to second place, although I consider myself neither domestic nor diva. Take this as a warning - you might have to endure some food fotos in the future.)
