The New Kid in Town [03 Apr 2007|02:48pm]
There's talk on the street; it sounds so familiar
Great expectations, everybody's watching you
People you meet, they all seem to know you
Even your old friends treat you like you're something new

Johnny come lately, the new kid in town
Everybody loves you, so don't let them down

Everybody's talking 'bout the new kid in town,
Everybody's walking' like the new kid in town
There's a new kid in town

-New Kid in Town (Eagles – Oh my god, the Eagles predicted the future again! Such a philosophic band will never walk the planet till hell freezes over.)

The new kid in town who is threatening to replace comrade Che from the t-shirts is Venezuelen president, Hugo Chavez.

He is so friggin' popular back home in Kerala(India) that ruling party(Communist Marxist Party of India), wants to invite him as the chief guest for the elaborate 50th anniversary celebrations of the first democratically elected communist government in India. The invitation requires clearance by the Central Govt. since the dignitary in question is an international leader. We'll wait and see, they could definitely use some Hugo boss over there.

Currently Chavez is Castro's left and right hand man as well as his mouth piece. The brand of socialism he promotes is called the socialism for 21st century although it is not much different from the one that was practiced in the previous century. Privatizations were reverted, social programs supported by oil money were created and the main enemy he warns his people against is still the same, "Mister Danger in Casa Blanca."

His political meetings have the aura of rock concerts fused in to religious congregations where Mr.Chavez is known to sing and people join him singing hymns of communism. No one really cares that behind the stage banners of Microsoft, McD and Texaco flutter in the air.

Inspite of his socialistic leanings the guy is media savy, he has his own television company – telesur. He knows his celebrity appeal quite well and is a news-maker par excellence. Just scanning today's headlines:- he has issued a nationwide ban of alcohol for Easter, has waved the threat of nationalization on Venezuela's private hospitals that if they continue raising the price of health care and has announced himself as an ardent hater of alternative fuel ethanol which he was seen promoting 24 hours ago(because Mister Danger also professed his love for ethanol) – all in a day’s work.

In Chavez’s own words, "I believe that this century will show us whether or not the human beings as a species will survive and to survive, there is only one road, that of socialism. Socialismo O muerte! Capitalism kills the planet."

I'd definitely like to be around to see what is it that'll kill our planet – socialism, capitalism or the dirty green aliens?
