Final Exam
I write this in the faint gleam of the night lamp well past midnight because tomorrow life will take over with more current things, stuff that need to be taken care of, like that telephone bill that has to be paid before the end of the month.

Tomorrow like everyone else still walking, talking and eating on this planet I'll deny death, shut my eyes on its existence in the bold brightness of mid-day sun.

Tonight for two and a half hours when the world around me was asleep I walked through the valley in the shadow of death, in the company of someone who has faced it hundreds of times in her working life.

From Pauline W.Chen - Harvard trained surgeon, a UCLA award recipient for the best surgeon of the year and the winner of several national awards for non-fiction and creative writing comes the revealing and thoughtful book - Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflections on Mortality.

Tomorrow I might not write this at all.

Tonight I hold my loves a little closer, a little more tighter....

will definitely look it up.

Apna desi "Atul Gawande" (harvard trained) started this trend. Read "Complications". He is also a regular writer for the New Yorker!

Good to know others are getting into the field

Atul Gawande is on the back cover of the book above as one of the three commentors along with NY Times and Publishers Weekly. Was thinking that I should read him as well.

Atul's Book "Complications" is a collection of short stories/experiences and easy to get through. But will keep you thinking long after.

The next issue of AnJ is currently in proofs. Over the weekend, I get to go over the proofs and pick any typos. aaaargh! So publication is about a week away.

Guess I could post atleast one of the articles online. Ok, early next week.

asking an atheist to pre-order a prayer-book is almost as brazen as opening Walmart in China :P good-luck with the book release, may this be the first of many!

I like: "like opening Walmart in China!" I should use that as a plug!

There are so many other uses for my book; for eg:
You can use it just as a space filler on you bookshelf; (and may pacify visiting in-laws and family; - or make them really MAD!)

swat giant alaskan mosquitos (in summer)

wave to distract mommy grizzly while you run off with cute cub

At a protest, you can burn my book. But please make sure TV cameras can see the cover and title clearly; and please buy more copies for all your friends to burn. :-))

There is a lot of white space on each page, and Om could use to doodle. (pen not provided).

You could rip out pages to wrap sandwiches in. Aha! Lunch with a prayer! Could be the start of a new franchise!

Carry as part of your camping gear to use as fire starter! I think pages will burn bright!

Rip out the cover and use to mask comic books - particularly useful at work or during boring community gatherings!

Very useful in the kitchen - when you just need an extra inch to reach that bottle on the top shelf, use book as step stool

No, I wouldn't recommend using it to break eggs!

You could use the spine to flatten hamburger patties.

... jeez, this could be a long list! (need to add this to my website!)

you are only limited by your imagination!
... and all for only $15.00

btw, this would be my second! ;-) See This.

for a prayer-book author you come off as a sacrilegious nihilist, even tempting me to pray (to correct your erring ways, ofcourse :P)
