Suggestions on Lens
All people who own DSLRs(Canon or Nikon), what is your walk-around lens and/or what is your favorite lens? TIA.

The lens I just bought:
Canon EF 24-105mm IS USM Lens

It's a lot heavier than what I was carrying before (the original kit lens I got with my Rebel), but it takes awesome photos and I'm pleased with the image stabilization feature too. Being able to go from a fairly wide angle to a bit closer is a definite advantage. I used to have to swap out lenses all the time - major pain in the behind.

24-105 is what I'd buy without doing any research(because a friend bought this after extensive research and recommended it), though the L lens price tag is a bit too steep to justify for an occasional photographer like me. Thanks Susan.

I agree with the price being steep. It's a major investment for sure!

That Tamron sounds good. Will have to check upon that.
50mm f/1.4 should be awesome for portraits.

sure sounds good. L lens or not is the vexing question :)

depends where you are 'walking around.'
my fav is the Nikon 50 mm, f/1.8 (~ 100 bucks)

btw, my D70 and 12-24mm was stolen from checked bag last week
:-(

... and the 50mm was in a different bag and is safe! :-))

man, that is a major loss(that lens must be twice the price of the camera if it was a nikon.) or were you inwardly happy that this could be a chance to upgrade to a d80 or even a canon :P

yes, the lens was more expensive than the camera! :-(
D80 or perhaps a D40x;
I am going to wait for a few months! I have enough pics from india to sort through.
(only lost the last 30+ pics on the card)

that is what I arrived at after an afternoon of research. was surprised that no one mentioned it till you did - price is right, so is the range and my 'quaking' hands need IS.

Hi Deepti, Wish you and your family a happy, healthy and successful 2008.
I see you have graduated from an amateur to a professional photographer :)

To you and your family too - a good year ahead.

Professional, no way. Beginner DSLRs are advertised in the place of click n shoot cameras and everyone owns one. With deals like Costco(they had a canon rebel xt+ kit lens + a zoom lens(75-300 or something) + a canon printer, all for $900(it was some months after I bought Rebelxt) it's hard to stop the urge. Everyone is a professional these days if you just go by the gear they own :)

I am assuming you need a zoom lens and not a prime or a wide-angled one. I like the Canon EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 II USM (about 200$ odd). Light weight, supports a wide range of shutter speeds and is good with cameras that have DOF. I usually put my trust in the reviews at:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/index.php?cat=45

You can sort the listing w.r.t. ratings/popularity to figure out where your lens stands vis-a-vis reviews, pros and cons.

Good luck

Not a prime, but I prefer wide-angle to zoom, blame some personal quirks. Your suggestion is good, seems quite popular and a price that fits the pocket. I'll have to weigh it against my personal affordable pick - Canon 17-85 IS USM.

Very useful site, book marked, will be going back more often in the next few months.

A friend has a Nikkor 18-200 VR, which I think is pretty useful given the wide range.

That sounds good, although I have canon. But by the time I buy(maybe in the 1-2 years) Canon might come out with something similar.

I am not able to post more then a few lines on any comment box. So pardon the briefness......
Premshree..says it nicely. A 18-200 VR Nikon lens should be the optimum choice

A prime lens is an overkill for day to day photography and specially where you are not going to blow up your prints to a large size. They say a prime lens is the last resort of a bad photogrpher who is suitably well heeled. After that there is nowhere to hide...:-)

I do not see daily shoots at 1.8, 1.4, 2.8. 3.5 at all. It would be a choice only for photography where low light and fast action is paramount and absolutely necessary for someone who has to submit photos of events as an assignment for the sake of his/her bread and butter.

I see you as some one who only looks for good wine and cheese and chocolate.

Lastly I wonder if this post will go through. ;-))

Prime lens sure is beyond my reach or need, I am just a hobbyist, perhaps not even there. Good wine and cheese yes, no chocolate(don't like.) My personal pick is Canon 17-85 IS USM F4-5.6, since 18-200 range cheap lens is not out for Canon yet(that one's good) Who knows by the time I save up to buy they might come out with 18-200.

Looks like all of a sudden, commenting became not so ezee for you , hope it is solved now.
